Write ✍️ Learn πŸ™‡ Try πŸ˜“

We read (or at least try to) a lot of online β€˜How to?’, β€˜What is?’ and β€˜Try this’ material. One thing that can be challenging with this regimen is how advanced many articles are β€” but, by trying to be everything for all readers, expert information is often stymied by the included basics (presumably, in case readers don't know them) which is confusing and time consuming. If we want a basics tutorial (and we frequently do), we'll read a basics tutorial. πŸ‘

Writers trying to pass on information should be targeting specific types of people and be writing just for them. If the reader doesn't know the basics (or about the particular topic) then they shouldn't be reading something that's written for someone else β€” for a different target audience.

When trying to learn something new, it's easy to get overwhelmed because trying to understand everything about a topic can be confusing β€” β€˜tutorial hell’ is an example of this where you can't escape because you've been overwhelmed by all the new information and end up understanding nothing.

This is usually a long process, so …

  1. Chose one small thing β€” something that helps but that you don't know.
  2. Meet with an experienced user β€” show how they use that single thing.
  3. Work hard on that single thing β€” try to understand it very well.
  4. Try the single thing yourself β€” this can be done on a small scale.
  5. Make notes as you learn β€” reflect on them later to recall.
  6. When finished β€” rinse and repeat β€” build on with another new thing.
